The theme for the 2025 Commonwealth Essay Competition is "Our Commonwealth Journey." This year’s theme emphasizes the transformative power of journeys—how they inspire exploration, foster learning, and drive growth. From the personal to the historical and geographical, participants are encouraged to reflect on journeys within the Commonwealth’s rich history or their own lives. Since its establishment in 1949, the Commonwealth has undergone numerous transformative journeys, evolving to its current state of 56 member countries, recently celebrating its 75th anniversary.

Benefits of Participation:

One winner and one runner-up will be selected from each category. They, along with a guardian, will enjoy a week in London packed with educational and cultural activities, culminating in an exclusive awards ceremony. 

Several Gold Finalist, Gold, Silver, and Bronze Awards will be distributed in both senior and junior categories to celebrate excellent writing. 

All participants will receive a Certificate of Participation. Additionally, local RCS (Royal Commonwealth Society) branches may organize regional ceremonies or award prizes, so entrants should check with their branch after the competition closes.

 

Eligibility Requirements:

This competition is open to:

  • Nationals or residents of all Commonwealth countries and territories.
  • Residents of Hong Kong, Ireland, and Zimbabwe.
  •  Residents of nonCommonwealth countries with an RCS branch or affiliated organization (applications must be submitted through the local RCS branch).  

 

Categories and Topics:

Senior Category (14–18 years; born between May 23, 2006, and May 23, 2011):

  1. Envision a Commonwealth where everyone has equal access to education. 
  2. Retell a famous folklore from your country or another Commonwealth nation in an unexpected way.  
  3. Reflect on a book that took you on an extraordinary journey—how did it impact you? 
  4. Write about the life journey of a plant in your community—what does it experience? 

 

Junior Category (under 14 years; born on or after May 23, 2011):

  1. Share a time you learned something fascinating about a different Commonwealth country. 
  2. Describe a sea voyage from a Commonwealth country to a small island nation—what do you see and who do you meet? 
  3. Imagine stepping through a secret door into your favourite book—what happens next? 
  4. Create a story about an animal CHOGM (Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting)—which animals attend, and what do they discuss?
