Government to Introduce National Standardized Test to Prepare Pupils for BECE

The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has announced plans to introduce a national standardized test for basic school pupils in Ghana. The initiative aims to psychologically prepare students for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) and other national assessments.

Target Classes for the National Standardised Test

The test will be conducted for pupils in the following classes:

  • Class 2 (P2)
  • Class 4 (P4)
  • Class 6 (P6)
  • Junior Secondary School 2 (JSS2)

Purpose of the National Standardised Test

Speaking at a public forum on Monday, February 17, Minister Iddrisu explained that the test is designed to:

  • Familiarize pupils with the examination process before taking high-stakes tests like BECE.
  • Help students develop confidence and test-taking skills.
  • Ensure students experience the psychological environment of an examination room at an early stage.

According to the minister, the initiative seeks to address the challenge where students face their first major exam only during BECE without prior exposure to formal assessments.

The National Standardised Test reflects the government’s commitment to improving educational outcomes and ensuring pupils are better equipped for future academic challenges.
