FG Tackles Electricity Crisis in Tertiary Institutions, Begins with MAU Yola

In a significant move to address the electricity crisis in Nigerian tertiary institutions, the Federal Government (FG) has commenced the construction of a 5KV solar power system at Modibbo Adama University (MAU), Yola. This initiative aims to provide a reliable power supply to the university while also benefiting its host communities.

Project Timeline and Expected Benefits

According to Professor Ibrahim Umar, Vice Chancellor of MAU, the solar project is expected to be completed and commissioned by April or early May 2025. The initiative will:

  • Reduce the university’s heavy annual electricity bill of ₦850 million, which consumes a significant portion of its ₦1.2 billion allocation.
  • Provide sustainable and uninterrupted power to support academic and administrative activities.
  • Extend electricity supply to host communities, improving overall access to power.

Major Developments at MAU Under New Leadership

Since assuming office less than six months ago, Professor Umar has led several groundbreaking initiatives, including:

  • Establishing three new faculties:
    • Faculty of Communication and Media Studies
    • Faculty of Arts
    • Faculty of Computing Science, offering courses in Computer Engineering, Data Science, and AI Science
  • Securing NUC accreditation for three existing faculties.
  • Gaining approval for the Faculty of Law and Faculty of Medicine, set to commence in the 2025/2026 academic session.
  • Introducing Nigeria’s first Forensic Science degree in the North, positioning MAU as a pioneer in this field.

Appeal for Government Support

During a visit from his 1989 set coursemates from the University of Maiduguri, Professor Umar called on Vice President Kashim Shettima, a fellow alumnus, to support the university’s development.

A Legacy of Excellence

Formerly known as the Federal University of Technology, Yola, MAU was founded in 1981 and has since grown into a center of excellence, attracting students from Nigeria and neighboring countries. With strengths in pure and applied sciences, agriculture, engineering, management, and IT, the university continues to expand its academic offerings and research capabilities.

Looking Ahead

This solar project marks a critical step toward energy sustainability in Nigerian universities. If successfully implemented at MAU Yola, similar projects may be extended to other institutions across the country, reducing dependency on unreliable power grids and fostering academic excellence.
