Applications are now open for the Helmholtz Zentrum Hereon PhD Scholarships 2025 in Germany. This is a fully funded opportunity for international students who wish to pursue a PhD in a world-class research environment.

 

Institute: Helmholtz Zentrum Hereon (Institute of Hydrogen Technology)

Research Focus:

  •  Sustainable and robust Mg (magnesium) alloys for hydrogen storage, aerospace, and mobility systems.
  •  Materials design, green hydrogen production, mobile hydrogen storage, and energy system architecture.
  •  Atomicscale mechanisms of Mgrare earth (RE) alloys.

You’ll gain handson experience with techniques like EBSD, TEM, SAXS, and nanoindentation experiments.

Research Objectives

  •  Identify atomicscale processes for strength and ductility in MgRE alloys.
  •  Improve existing MgRE materials and contribute to creating REfree Mg alloys and digital twins.
  •  Use ex situ/in situ nanoindentation, EBSD, TEM, SAXS methods for material characterization.

 

Eligibility Criteria

 Master’s degree in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, or related fields.

 Strong knowledge in:

  •    Metallurgy
  •    Mechanical behavior of metallic materials
  •    Slip/twinning mechanisms

 Experience with:

  •    Magnesium alloys
  •    Microcompression techniques
  •    SEM based methods (an advantage)

 Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently and collaboratively.  Individuals with disabilities will be prioritized if equally qualified.
